What are sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)?

STDs are diseases that are passed from one person to another through sexual contact. And these include chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes, human papillomavirus (HPV), syphilis, and HIV.

Key Facts:
• More than 1 million sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are acquired every day worldwide, the majority of which are asymptomatic.
• Each year there are an estimated 374 million new infections with 1 of 4 STDs: chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and trichomoniasis.
• More than 500 million people aged 15 to 49 years are estimated to have genital infections with the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
• HPV infection is associated with 570 000 cases of cervical cancer in 2018, and over 311 000 cervical cancer deaths each year.
• Almost 1 million pregnant women were estimated to be infected with syphilis in 2016, resulting in over 350 000 adverse birth outcomes including 200 000 stillbirths and newborn deaths.

Social, Economic, and Behavioral Factors

​

The widespread of STDs ( Sexually Transmitted Disease ) is affected by social, economic, and behavioral factors. Such factors may cause serious challenges to the prevention of STD and it’s due to the influence of sexual networks. The access and willingness to seek care, and also social norms regarding its sex and sexuality.
